Rugby union: Wirral beat Anselmians in derby clash

Wirral 31 Anselmians 14

WIRRAL made an outstanding start to this local derby and showed a desire to play open rugby despite the greasy conditions.

Their forwards dominated possession for the first 30 minutes, and Anselmians were reduced to 14 men when their stand-off received a yellow card.

Wirral took a 17-0 lead with tries from Danny Harvey, Joe Callaghan-Adnams, and Ali Baker; one try converted by Craig Harvey.

Anselmians closed the gap to 17-14 at half-time.

But the second half saw Wirral take control through Callaghan-Adnams and Craig Harvey, who converted both tries try.

In the final minutes, Anselmians applied some late pressure but Wirral’s defence was solid and the score remained 31-14 at the final whistle.

Next week, Wirral travel to Vale of Lune.

Recent games against Vale have been exciting, close encounters and Wirral will hope to repeat last month’s home win.
