TRANMERE VICS were made to fight hard for a four-wicket success at Cheshire Lines to stay top of the Bromborough Paints Merseyside Competition.
John Laybounre hit 46 in a Lines total of 106. Vics replied with 107-6 with Ben Buchanan and Andy Wood each reaching 28. Whitefield stayed in title contention with a 104 runs success over Goodlass who were put out for just 42.
Paul Dwerryhouse scored 44 and Steve Price finished with 5-8. Mark Doyle claimed a hat-trick for Old Xaverians as they beat St Mary’s College Old Boys by four wickets. Doyle finished with 3-13.
S. Suthakaran made 58 for Maritime, who were denied victory by the last Bromborough pair.
Runcorn came away eight wickets to the good from Cholmondeley in Division One of the Meller Braggins Cheshire League.
Cheshire Shield games involving Caldy v Birkenhead St Mary’s and Parkfield Liscard v Hale Barns were weather victims on Sunday and were put back seven days.

Northern’s Dreams of appearing at Lord’s are still alive after Phil Cooper’s side defeated Fairwood Bootle by eight wickets in the Group Six final of the Cockspur Cup at Moor Park yesterday, writes Paul Edwards.
Most plaudits go to the Northern all-rounder, Carl Hey, who took 3-24 and then made 67 not out as his side easily overh auled Bootle’s total of 129-9 in 35 overs.
Jack Woosey took 2-17 from seven overs and Adrian Fraser, 3-31, as Ian Cockbain’s batsmen struggled to escape the shackles which Cooper’s men placed on them. David Snelgrove (29) top-scored for the Wadham Road side.
In the second innings of the match John Wildman (36) shared a second-wicket partnership of 105 with Hey and the home team completed their demolition with three overs to spare.
Northern visit Leicestershire side, Kibworth, in the last 16 on Sunday.
