Ryder in seven-wicket haul for N. Brighton

KIWI Jesse Ryder was the chief destroyer as New Brighton took over at the top of the Liverpool Competition Premier Division with a 57-run win over Maghull.

The New Zealand A all-rounder finished with impressive figures of 7-63 as Maghull were dismissed for 196 after being set 254 to win. David Roots top-scored for the visitors with 64.

New Brighton openers John While (81) and Matthew Thompson (65) had earlier laid the foundations for victory with a 114-run stand for the first wicket.

Kiran Powar (4-46) and Niall McDonnell (3-38) led the Maghull fightback but they couldn’t prevent the hosts from reaching 253 for nine declared.

Previous leaders Colwyn Bay, who were not in action at the weekend, remain second after fellow title contenders Bootle suffered a surprise 90-run defeat at Fleetwood Hesketh.

After electing to bat, Hesketh posted 211 courtesy of important knocks from Nikita Miller (53), Neil Rimmer (44) and Steve Rimmer (33). Steve Parry claimed 4-53.

Will Purser struck 45 for Bootle in reply but received little support as they crashed to 121 all out.

Northern and Ormskirk remain in contention for the silverware after registering emphatic victories on Saturday.

At Moor Park, Northern put Wallasey to the sword as they raced to 302 for four off 43 overs.

Carl Hey struck an unbeaten 103 and put on 121 for the second wicket with Steve Mullaney, who made 77. Nick Woods (35), Steve Cole (31no) and John Wildman (29) ensured the scoring rate remained at over six runs per over.

Simon Keen took 3-97 for Wallasey, who then slumped to 164 all out.

Barrie Beaver top-scored with 39 not out as Wildman (4-25) and Jack Woosey (3-28) wrapped up a 138-run triumph.

Ormskirk are fifth but just 14 points off top spot after an eight-wicket win at strugglers Huyton.

Suwanji Madanayake (4-40), Nick Caunce (3-24) and Ian Robinson (3-53) helped to dismiss Huyton for 172 (61.4). David Heyes top-scored with 38.

Ormskirk took just 23.3 overs to reach their target as Jack Kelliher hammered 104 off 56 balls.

After reaching 50 off 39 balls, Kelliher then needed just a further 13 deliveries to reach his century. His blistering innings included 14 fours and five sixes.

John Armstrong provided the support with an unbeaten 51 and the pair put on 148 for the second wicket as Ormskirk reached 173 for two.

St Helens Recs piled on the misery for bottom club Leigh with a 14-run win.

Recs were indebted to a second-wicket stand of 182 between Shaun Latham (125) and Stuart Lyon (89) as they posted a total of 258 for four.

Kieran Grundy (87) and Alex Roussak (73) put Leigh in contention but Recs held their nerve as Mark Jenkins took 5-67 and Kelby Pickering claimed 4-58.

In the other Premier Division clash, Hightown won by two wickets at home to Lytham.

The bowlers dominated a low scoring contest as Lytham were dismissed for 153 after being put into bat.

Andy Warhurst (5-49) and Nishit Shetty (3-52) did the damage, while James Wisniewski top-scored with 46.

Hightown reached their target off 43.4 overs, thanks to the efforts of Shetty (34), Ian Sutcliffe (33) and Phil Whelan (24no), who saw them home. Wisniewski took 3-38 and Michael Rigby 3-60.
