Rain forces postponement of Knockout semis

WIDESPREAD rain caused the postponement of both Cheshire Cricket Knockout Cup semi-finals on Sunday and the organisers have their fingers crossed they can both be resolved in time for the final scheduled for September 2.

The abandonment of their game against Widnes came as good news for Oulton Park as it means they will now have the services of their Minor Counties quartet next Sunday.

Danny Leech, Chris Bassano, Nathan Dumelow and Ben Spendlove were all due to have played for Cheshire last Sunday, but will be free next weekend, even though it means making an unscheduled late-night dash to London for the following day’s Minor Counties Cup final against Suffolk at Lord’s.

The other semi-final between Oxton and New Brighton is to be played at Townfield Lane on Friday (3pm) in a match of 40 overs each. There will be a toss of the coin to decide the final venue.

The Cheshire Shield final is between County League clubs Cheadle Hulme and Heaton Mersey at Grove Park on Sunday (1pm).

Stockport are through to their first Cheshire Under-21 Cup final when they will play Wallasey or holders Nantwich, who meet at the Kevin McCullagh Oval on Sunday. The final is on Sunday, September 9.
