Cricket: Newton’s Walkden delights at keeping ‘it local’

NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS captain Ian Walkden is delighted that his club has taken the local route to success.

The Crow Lane side play Sefton Park tomorrow in a match which will go a long way towards deciding who accompanies favourites Formby into the Premier League next season.

“It would be great for the club to get promotion with 11 lads who pay annual subscriptions and their subs on a Saturday,” he said.

“We all work together and a team ethos like ours can get you over the line in a tight game.”

“We’ve begun to think about the possibility of bringing someone in and ideally we’re looking for an opening bowler.” he added.

“I don’t want us to get into the Premier League and struggle.

“It’s our 150th anniversary next year and it would be nice to be in the top division but there is no pressure on us like there is on other clubs.”

In the First Division of the Business Assistance Liverpool Competition, Prestatyn and Northop Hall will need to win at Orrell Red Triangle and Liverpool respectively if they are to maintain credible promotion challenges.

Southport Trinity’s relegation back to the MSCA will probably be confirmed if they don’t defeat Wavertree at the Rookery.
