Cricket: Tributes paid to stalwart Glayzer

CRICKETERS throughout the Liverpool Competition joined players and officials of Ormskirk CC this week in mourning the passing of Nick Glayzer, who died on Monday, aged 56.

Glayzer devoted his entire recreational cricket career to the Brook Lane club. He first became a member in 1959 and played for the first team from 1968 until 1993, captaining the side in 1982-3 and 1992-3. He joined the committee in 1975 and was fixture secretary for 17 seasons.

The former headmaster was also appointed youth cricket co-ordinator in 1998 and managed several of Ormskirk’s junior sides. Recently he did sterling work as groundsman.

“Nick was a loyal servant to Ormskirk CC and utterly dedicated to the club,” said current first team captain Adam Waterhouse. “Whenever I passed the ground in the cricket season he could always be seen working on the ground. What impressed me was his passion for the club and he particularly loved watching his three sons play for the first team,” added Waterhouse.

“He loved the bones of the place,” said son Ian. “It became his refuge and it kept him strong.”

His funeral will be held at 10.30am on Monday at St Thomas’s Church, Lydiate.
