Prize Guy upsets St Helens at home

HUYTON and St Helens suffered heavy defeats on home ground.

Relegated Huyton were completely overwhelmed against Northop Hall, going down by 10 wickets.

They were skittled for 76 and their attack made little impression as Alex Smith made 56no in an easy victory.

Prize guy at St Helens was Wavertree medium pacer Stewart Guy, who finished with 6-27 as the home side succumbed for 76. Narender Negi hit 52no in another 10 wicket triumph.

Chris Whelan made a superb debut for Liverpool in an enthralling tied finish at Ainsdale.

Openers Shiv Das (119 not out) and Paul O’Leary (48) shared a first wicket partnership of 142 for the visitors, with Jimmy Titmuss adding 32 in a total of 221-2 declared.

Whelan (5-73 off 18) made an impact in the reply, but Waqar Khan (44) and Waqas Chugtai (30) gave Ainsdale a great chance. A run out when going for the second off the last ball resulted in the tie.

Rainford came off better against Skelmersdale in the battle of the promoted sides.

Skelmersdale were in desperate trouble at 20-6, but eventually reached 89. Anthony Filson (3-19), Mark Williams (3-20) and Michael Lambert (3-25) did the damage, and then Steven Harrison top-scored with 41 in the seven wicket success.

Orrell Red Triangle’s Chris Riley made a dream start as their new captain, cracking 115 (15 fours, three sixes) and leading his side to a comprehensive 141 run victory over Wigan. He shared 115 for the third wicket with Richard Smith (72, seven fours) in amassing 250-5 Adnan Malik, who also made 40, took 4-21 as the visitors were dismissed for 109.

Sefton Park (Chris Bellis 36) managed only 122 as Mike Walkden (5-50) made inroads after they were inserted at Newton le Willows. The home side, at one stage 68-4, eased to a six wicket margin, Mark Fearnley scoring 33 and David Baird taking 3-36.
