Cricket: Bowdon late win shocks Bootle

BOWDON, one of two clubs in The Right Move Abroad Cheshire County League to have reached the final of the Cockspur Cup at Lord’s – Bramhall are the others – pulled off a sensational last-ball win in a second round game against Bootle at Wadham Road.

Bootle batted well enough to post 213-9 in their 45 overs, David Snellgrove 65, Stephen Parry 52, Gareth Edwards 3-43. Bowdon started well in reply with former Northern batsmen Carl Hey 47, declined to 101-6 before Nick Murrills chipped in with a bright 54 and skipper Stephen Bramhall 32. They needed 15 off the last over, a feat achieved by young tail-ender Mike Bryan-Jones when he hit a six and four off the two final deliveries for a one-wicket win.

It ended Ian Cockbain’s last chance to take Bootle all the way to Lord’s in the last season before he retires in September.

In round three, Bowdon will visit Kearsley who put out Cheshire County League leaders Alderley Edge by five wickets, chasing 235 (David Leeming 99). Kearsley’s David Morris completed an unbeaten 100 for the Bolton League side.

Urmston beat Sefton Park by three wickets after the Liverpool Competition side had reached 212-9 (Colin Grindley 5-31). Urms-ton replied with 215-7, Mike Ness 55 not out.

Chester Boughton Hall lost by three wickets to Leyland, despite a fine 100 by skipper Steve Ogilby had helped them post 169. Leyland replied with 194-7.

David Hurst’s 62 out of 180-9 failed to save Neston from a five-wicket loss at home to Darcy Lever.

Hyde had a walk over when Huyton withdrew and Nantwich went out by four wickets at Wolverhampton.

In the second round of the Cheshire Cup, there were shock defeats for Birkenhead Park and Upton at the hands of Stockport and Brooklands.
