Birkenhead Park go through in controversial derby

THE Birkenhead derby match on Sunday between Park and St Mary’s in the second round of the Cheshire Shield was disrupted when a member of the public went on the rampage. Police were called and a man was detained.

Park won the game in which St Mary’s controversially fielded their ineligible overseas player Shakir Nawaz, top-scorer with 80 in his side’s 180-8. Park won by 113 runs having earlier rattled up 293-4, Tom Hunter 90, skipper Andy Gibson 63 and Chris Foran 55 not out.

Rain spoiled most other games and while Marple beat Cheadle Hulme and Crewe had a walkover against Alderley Park, the Middlewich v Congleton, Rode Park v Romiley, Hale Barns v Compstall and Upton v Ashton-on-Mersey ties were all postponed to next Sunday.

In the fourth round of the Cheshire Cup, Brooklands unluckily went out on run rate following rain after scoring 221-8 in 45 overs (4.9 runs per over) to which Elworth replied with 83-2 in 15.1 overs (5.5). Burnage withdrew giving Nantwich a bye.

The quarter-final draw is: Hyde v Nantwich (July 20), Oulton Park v Bowdon (July 13), Toft or Didsbury v Widnes (July 20), Elworth v Wallasey (July 13).

Tattenhall’s well-appointed ground is to stage the President’s Trophy quarter-final replay between the Cheshire County League and the North Yorks & South Durham League on Sunday.

An initial attempt to play the game at Darlington last Sunday was rained off.

The winners at Tattenhall will visit Liverpool Competition in the semi-finals on Sunday, July 27.

Draw for the quarter-finals of the Cheshire County League Fred Graham Twenty20 Trophy is: Alderley Edge v Timperley, Marple v Hyde, Chester Boughton Hall v Oulton Park, Grappenhall v Bowdon. Games are to be played by August 1.
