BLUE WATCH: Everton boss David Moyes getting the best out of young and old

Jo, for instance, has clearly been made to feel like a million dollars – or twenty million, even – since his switch from Manchester City, and the way that the situation with Victor Anichebe has been handled has been nothing short of masterful.

Moyes was clearly livid with the young striker, but recognising the need to have him involved, he’s welcomed him back into the fold, stated categorically in his programme notes that the matter is now closed, and in return Anichebe played an instrumental part in getting Everton into the quarter-final draw.

The decision to substitute him with three minutes remaining gave the crowd a chance to applaud him and draw a line under the whole episode. Nicely done.

Despite his hand in the two goals though, Anichebe wasn’t the youngster everyone was talking about after the match.

Nor was it Dan Gosling, who looks as if he’s playing at Premier League level for years. Jack Rodwell is the latest man, or boy, of the moment, after putting on a midfield display of real maturity against seriously uncompromising opposition.

This was the first time that we got a chance to see exactly why he is rated so highly by Everton and plenty of other top clubs in this country and beyond.

Playing alongside Mikel Arteta must be a great help for any player though.

The Spaniard just keeps getting better and better, and makes everyone around him look good – the experienced professionals as well as the youngsters breaking through.

His performance on Sunday was reminiscent of Paul Scholes at his best, with the rest of the players safe in the knowledge that, if in doubt, they can give the ball to Mikel.

He’s a pleasure to watch, as are the rest of them, and the games just can’t come around quick enough at the moment.
