Northwich Vics 4 Winsford United 0
VICS registered their first victory of the season, though celebrations were muted at the sparsely populated Victoria Stadium on Tuesday.
Before their lowest ever recorded gate of 125 they built on an error by goalkeeper Mike Langley to knock their stubborn neighbours out of the Cheshire Senior Cup 1st round.
United had matched their hosts from four rungs higher until half-time was within site. Then Langley spilled a shot by Mike Byrne and Kevin Townson pounced on the loose ball.
Paul tait claimed Vics’ second in 57 minutes, though Mike Carr’s shot had beaten Langley and was bound for the net anyway. Given Vics’ luck this season tait was not taking any chances.
Langley made another error in 76 minutes from Simon Heslop’s shot and Mike Coulson made it 3-0 on the follow-up. The same player completed a satisfactory night for Northwich with a rising shot late on.
United can be proud of bridging the gap during the first half, but created few chances as Vics kept their first clean sheet of the campaign.
