DERBY RATINGS: Everton

TIM HOWARD

Beaten twice again but couldn’t be faulted for either goal. Made a good save to deny Steven Gerrard his 100th Liverpool goal late on, turning the visiting skipper’s 25-yard effort away. Score 6

TONY HIBBERT

Relishes the derby challenge and was thrown straight back in after injury to add bite to the back four. Performed well until cramp forced him off. Score 6

JOLEON LESCOTT

Overall he was steadier than in recent weeks but still panicked on a couple of occasions, hacking clear when he could have taken an extra touch. Drawn inside by Dirk Kuyt to leave Fernando Torres free to score the first goal. Score 6

JOSEPH YOBO

The only member of the home defence able to match Torres for pace, he battled gamely, especially in the air but was eventually unable to stem the tide. Score 6

PHIL JAGIELKA

Much-improved from his Merseyside derby debut at Goodison a year ago when he seemed lost in midfield. Everton’s outstanding performer was a defensive rock and was unfortunate to see his clearance fall straight to Torres’s feet for the second goal. Score 8

MIKEL ARTETA

Everton’s creative force returned after illness kept him out against Blackburn in mid-week. Although he showed flashes of brilliance, he was unable to work any telling openings to the visitors’ stubborn defence. Score 6

PHIL NEVILLE

The home skipper moved into central midfield to replace Segundo Castillo in the holding role as Hibbert came in at right-back. Typically committed display but his side lost their way badly in the second half and he was booked following a foul on Albert Riera. Score 6

MAROUANE FELLAINI

Making his Goodison debut, Everton’s record £15million signing had to rein in much of the bite in his game due to fussy early booking by Mike Riley. Started slowly but warmed up well and proved a handful in the air for Liverpool with his stature. Score 6

LEON OSMAN

Tried to pick his way through Liverpool with some measured passing but was often frustrated. A determined effort from the diminutive midfielder but he was not able to impose himself. Score 6

TIM CAHILL

The Australian Has troubled Liverpool in the past but this was a derby to forget for him. Fluffed his big chance to put Everton ahead when his miscued a shot from an Arteta corner and his walking away following a nasty tackle on Xabi Alonso could well have prompted Riley to show him the red card. Score 4

AYEGBENI YAKUBU

Looked lost on his own up front, coming out second best in a muscular contest with Martin Skrtel and was booked for an outrageous dive when trying to win a penalty. Score 5

SUBSTITUTE

LOUIS SAHA (on for HIBBERT 63)

Gave Everton an extra dimension as they switched to a more positive 4-4-2. Flashed a powerful long range effort wide of Reina’s post. Score 7
