BARRY HORNE: Everton are best-placed club within their ‘group’

IT’S been a fantastic week for Everton in terms of their own results compared with those of the teams bracketed alongside them in the Premier League hierarchy.

The fact they have climbed to seventh place in the table with three eminently winnable fixtures coming up on the horizon is put into context by the situation at Tottenham Hotspur, where incoming manager Harry Redknapp has also had a spectacular seven days, yet still finds himself in charge of a side propping up the Premier League.

I’m sure that in time the White Hart Lane outfit will climb away from the danger zone, but for Everton the task is to maintain their recent momentum throughout the rest of the month that will bring everyone a lot closer to January and the re-opening of the transfer window and all that it entails.

Redknapp has been promised funds, Newcastle United may have new owners and a new manager by then – a massive change that will bring with it a considerable war chest – and at Manchester City manager Mark Hughes will be itching to spend some of the millions that he has been guaranteed.

Although Newcastle and Spurs are seemingly too far detached to aspire to anything much more than Premier League survival this season, one would expect City to be there challenging with Everton to capture a UEFA Cup spot come the end of the campaign.

While Keith Harris seems confident in securing a buyer for Newcastle, the silence regarding Everton’s future ownership is deafening and, as it stands, manager David Moyes will once again presumably have to continue weaving magic with the squad of players currently available to him.
