Everton boss David Moyes: No big deals in January

DAVID MOYES has reiterated his concerns about the size of his squad – and fears that he won’t be able to improve the situation in the January transfer window.

The Everton manager takes his side to Tottenham tomorrow for his 300th game in charge with doubts over Louis Saha following a hamstring injury sustained at Wigan on Monday night, while Steven Pienaar has still not returned to training following a knee injury.

Tony Hibbert is also struggling with a thigh strain while Moyes has long-term worries over James Vaughan, who will be out until the New Year with a knee cartilage problem and Nuno Valente, who has just undergone knee surgery.

But the latest additions to the sick list are hampering his attempts to get back on track at White Hart Lane following Monday’s disappointing performance in the 1-0 defeat to Wigan.

Moyes has suffered from a shortage of numbers since the start of the season, which his side kicked off with no new additions to the playing squad.

Although that situation was rectified by some recruits in the remainder of the summer deadline, a series of injuries has prevented Everton being at full strength for any prolonged period of the campaign.

And with the £15million record signing of Marouane Fellaini being the only serious outlay that has been made since the end of last season, an emphasis on loan moves is also set to dominate the next window.

“We are actively looking at what will make a difference but I don’t think I will be able to do much in January,” said Moyes. “I am more likely to be looking at the loan market.

“We haven’t got a massive squad of players. We bought one player and brought a couple in on loan in the summer and with that it makes it difficult to have a squad where you have great competition.

“I look at other teams and they have players costing £8m, £9m, £10m and there is maybe three or four of them on the bench.
