Joleon Lescott calls on Everton to back to basics

JOLEON LESCOTT has vowed to go “back to basics” after expressing disappointment at his form this season.

The defender, who was Everton’s player of the season last year, has endured an inconsistent campaign that was encapsulated during the dramatic finale to Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at home to Aston Villa.

Lescott dragged David Moyes’s side level for the second time in the final minute with an acrobatic volley only to then look on helpless as Ashley Young scored the winner.

Moyes remains convinced that Lescott can rediscover the level of his impressive first two seasons following his arrival from Coca-Cola Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And Lescott said: “I’m disappointed with the way things have gone personally so far this season overall. Consistency is the key for any player and I’m not different.

“I haven’t hit the heights that I did last season or the standards I want to set. You always want to improve and get better, and this season has been quite frustrating for me in terms of performances.

“Hopefully I can get back to basics and get a run of consistency again.”

Lescott, a centre-back by trade, has once again spent much of the season operating at left-back.

But the England international added: “It’s not a problem. I did it last season so I can’t look for excuses. I did it then so there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be doing it now.”

Everton’s weekend defeat means they are now six points adrift of fifth-placed Villa, but Lescott believes the Goodison outfit are capable of embarking on an unbeaten run to threaten the Premier League’s leading pack.
