All-English back four a help – Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines

Johnson made a positive impression when breaking into the City first team two years ago but, having not started a game for almost four months following a pelvic injury, has seen Stephen Ireland take his place in central midfield.

Everton are well stocked in midfield but capturing England under-21 international Johnson would provide extra cover for Tim Cahill to play in a forward role.

And it could also open the possibility of signing the player on a permanent deal in the summer.

However, City could use Johnson as bait in their efforts to sign Scott Parker from West Ham United.

But any attempts to use the midfielder in a similar fashion to tempt Everton into parting with either Mikel Arteta or Joleon Lescott are a non-starter with the Goodison outfit having previously stated they have no intention with selling.

Everton under-18s’ FA Youth Cup fourth round tie with Burnley has been switched from Turf Moor to Accrington Stanley’s Fraser Eagle Stadium. The game will still take place on Wednesday, January 14 (kick-off 7pm).
