MAKING the most of your chances is key to any young footballer’s progression.
And Everton coach Neil Dewsnip will be hoping his side can do just that when they face Burnley in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup at Accrington Stanley’s Fraser Eagle Stadium tonight (kick-off 7pm).
Another youngster Dan Gosling took his first team opportunity over the Christmas holidays as Everton once again added to the long line of teen talents making a name for themselves in David Moyes’s side.
For all the Academy youngsters in action in Lancashire tonight there is evidence that going all the way to the first team is an achievable aim.
A lengthy run in the Youth Cup would do their hopes of progress no harm, but taking chances will be vital to achieve that aim.
Although Everton came through their first hurdle in the Youth Cup with a 2-0 win over UniBond League side Nantwich Town before Christmas, Dewsnip hopes they learned the lessons from that match – when despite having a host of chances failure to take them meant the game was never really safe.
Dewsnip said: “We will be looking to progress again obviously. The key will be taking any chances that come along. I thought will did smashing until the final third in the last round, but we will be looking to be better at that this time.
“We have been working on it all season, but we have been working on all areas of the game. With young players you look to cover all the bases. Your focus is on the individuals rather than the team.”
Tonight’s match will be Everton’s first of the new year and the first since they beat Nantwich before the Christmas break in fixtures on December 15.
