BARRY HORNE: Psychological advantage is now with David Moyes’s men

WHILE Monday’s Mersey stalemate raised doubts about Liverpool’s ability to last the course in the title race, the 1-1 draw spoke volumes about Everton’s resilience under David Moyes.

And, as well as inflicting a blow on Liverpool’s hopes of claiming the Premier League crown, the result gives Moyes’s men the psychological edge going into this weekend’s FA Cup clash.

I have said previously that most Everton fans would have taken a defeat in the league at Anfield if it meant they beat Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Well, they’ve started the week brilliantly and I don’t see any reason why they can’t finish it the same way.

What Cahill’s late equaliser and the sight of Manchester United sitting above them will have done to the collective mindset of everyone in the Liverpool camp is anyone’s guess. But I'm willing to bet that it isn’t positive.

Looking back to Monday’s league match, every Evertonian must be very proud of their team’s efforts, and how they’ve played over the past few weeks.

The odds bookmakers were giving on a Steven Gerrard hat-trick and 3-0 victories to Liverpool clearly show that they gave Everton no chance of coming away from Anfield with anything other than a good beating. But you can never write off this squad that David Moyes has spent the last six years building, as once again they showed not just their togetherness, team spirit and resilience, but also some fantastic ability as well.

I thought Everton had the better of the first 45 minutes although Liverpool did have a better opening five minutes before the break. Liverpool then had their own good spell, which you expect in any Premier League game these days.
