Moyes set to miss out on new faces

DAVID MOYES has resigned himself to being unable to do any squad strengthening in the remainder of the transfer window.

The Everton manager revealed after last night’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Goodison Park that attempts to secure two late loan signings have fallen through.

And with just five days left to add new players to his depleted squad, Moyes isn’t hopeful he will able to boost the numbers.

“We were in for two loan signings and both of them look as though they won’t come off,” said Moyes.

“They were the ones we were after so unless something comes out of the blue, that’s it. They were the two we were interested in and they won’t come off.”

Moyes’s injury problems didn’t worsen last night, however, as Tim Cahill is expected to be fit to take on Manchester United on Saturday after the injury that cut short his involvement in the game was “just a kick to the foot”.

Everton go to Old Trafford in the sixth place they were guaranteed to be in after the midweek round of Premier League games – but Robin van Persie’s injury-time equaliser ensured Arsenal remain five points ahead of them in fifth, which is the one automatic UEFA Cup qualifying spot.

It was Cahill

who had put Everton in a prime position to close the gap to two points when he headed in Leighton Baines’s cross in the 61st minute for his 100th career goal.

“He is playing up front and getting a scoring record like a striker,” said Moyes.

“He’s taking the knocks and doing a lot of good things for the team.

“His goal was a terrific header from a lovely cross and I though at that time we deserved it, we had worked hard enough to earn a goal.

“With the injuries he has had, he has missed a bit recently but he is getting right back up to the levels he has set.

“Goalscoring is such a big thing in football wherever you play, in midfield or up front and Tim can always get a goal. That’s what makes him a special talent.”

The late volley from van Persie came from one of the few chances Arsenal created in a game in which they were second best for long periods.

But Moyes was disappointed with the failure of his players to close out the game – and chase down Abou Diaby before he launched the cross that van Persie collected to tee up his goal.

“I think we had a chance to run it into the corner and kept it and maybe tried to get a second goal. We should have kept it better,” he said.

“We should have done better with the ball prior to them scoring as well.”

Moyes added: “I think those two points tonight would have been crucial. We are just outside the teams above us and those points would have got us much closer. I think Aston Villa will be the team most pleased with a draw tonight.

“It’s a long way to go and catch them, but if we keep playing as well as we are doing then I think we can do that.

“I do think Everton played well tonight and showed confidence. The players were very good but we just lacked that little bit to finish it off.

“But when good players get an opportunity they take it and van Persie took his chance.”
