Moyes: Cup match won’t affect line-up

DAVID MOYES is poised to enter Old Trafford this evening without Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini – but insists his team selection won’t be influenced by the forthcoming FA Cup clash with Liverpool.

Both Cahill and Fellaini are major doubts for Everton’s trip down the East Lancs Road to take on league leaders Manchester United.

Cahill hobbled off towards the end of Wednesday’s 1-1 home draw with Arsenal although scans later revealed the Australian had suffered nothing more than heavy bruising to his right foot.

Fellaini, meanwhile, sustained a gash to the shin in the same game on his return from a two-match suspension that ruled him out of the Premier League and FA Cup games at Liverpool.

While admitting neither injury is serious, Moyes will not risk the fitness of his star duo but says he is not yet even considering Wednesday’s FA Cup fourth round replay Merseyside derby.

“The Liverpool game does not come into my thinking as regards team selection,” said the Everton manager. “I wouldn’t risk anybody on Saturday, but not because of the Liverpool game. I have to be sure the players are right.

“Tim has got quite a sore foot and Felli got a stud through his shin, so we will see tomorrow. I’ve not even thought about the Liverpool game.

“Both are doubts. Neither of them have trained since the Arsenal game, but it was only on Wednesday night so sometimes that can happen. We’ll see how they are by teatime on Saturday. I think both would make next week (the Liverpool game) okay. Tim’s is a bruised foot that I just think needs time, and Felli’s shin has a hole in it which will heal up easily enough.”

The possible absence of Cahill, whose goal in midweek was the 100th of his career, and Fellaini means Victor Anichebe and Segundo Castillo are on standby to return to the starting line-up.

But Moyes has hinted the likes of Jack Rodwell and Dan Gosling, who have both impressed when handed first-team opportunities this season, could be given the nod at Old Trafford this evening as Everton aim to extend a nine-match unbeaten run.

“It may well be time to bring in some youngsters,” said the manager. “We’ll see how the players are tomorrow, but the boys here know the situation. If some players are unfit, then the youngsters will be coming into the team and I think they are more than ready to do so.

“We have to use the youngsters more than most clubs, I feel. The good thing about that is they get blooded into the team early and have some opportunities. There’s definitely a route through to the first team at Everton, and if they are good enough to take it then good for them.

“The downside to playing youngsters is you can never tell if they are ready to be thrown in, and you never know if they will be capable for games such as away at Manchester United.”

Everton’s unbeaten run has meant Joseph Yobo has been an unused substitute since returning from a hamstring injury.

And Moyes said of the Nigerian: “I don’t think Joseph could moan and groan at being left out. He’s looking at two centre-backs who are playing absolutely out of their skin at this moment in time. Joseph was playing well before he was out the team. Bainesy had to sit there and get on with it before he got his chance. It’s part of life, and I’m sure it will soon change around again, it’s happened before.”
