Everton, though, had claims for a spot-kick of their own after Joleon Lescott was hauled over by Rio Ferdinand late in the second half but Phil Jagielka was pragmatic about the situation.
"It was a bit of a needless penalty but they controlled the game and we didn’t really cause them as many problems as we would have liked," said Jagielka.
"We weren’t really sure what happened when Michael Carrick went down but it was given, they scored and it’s disappointing that the same thing happened as last season.
"Should we have had one? Let’s be honest, you’re not going to get them here and you’d be fortunate to get them at home. There’s no point complaining about it."
