Two-goal Jo delighted by show of support
TWO-GOAL Everton hero Jo has revealed his determination to repay the trust shown in him by David Moyes.
And the Brazilian striker believes his game is already benefiting from a major injection of confidence since arriving at Goodison last week.
Jo, signed on loan from Manchester City until the end of the season, enjoyed a sparkling debut on Saturday as he scored twice and also won a penalty to help Everton ease to a comfortable 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.
The 21-year-old had previously scored just one Premier League goal this season after falling out of favour at Eastlands following an £18million move from CSKA Moscow in the summer.
Now Jo is adamant he has a point to prove that he will not be considered a failure in English football after his miserable time at City.
“The manager has put a lot of trust in me so that when I went into the game I did feel confident even though I had not played in a while,” said the striker.
“Of course the two goals help too – that was great for my confidence. He is very good for building players confidence and he does giving players a chance you saw that when he put on a 17-year-old on (Jack Rodwell) and a 19-year-old (Dan Gosling) scored the goal.
“It is really good that the manager has trust and will give you a chance. The players always feel confident with that trust in them.
“I probably do have a point to prove to people here who have not seen anything like the best of me but that will come game by game hopefully but I don’t have any angry feelings towards Manchester City whatsoever.
“It was very frustrating when I arrived in England and was not playing and psychologically I was very low and really down.
“But now, what I want to do is the best for me and Everton and help them.”
Jo had not scored in any competition since netting twice in the UEFA Cup in Cyprus against Omonia Nicosia in September – his only other goals for City.
And the Brazilian added: “I have forgotten what it felt like to come off a pitch feeling like that. It has been such a long time – four or five months. I had hoped that I would get that feeling back, but you never know.
“It has been a bit difficult. It makes a difference going into a settled team full of mates rather than an all-star team of strangers.
“City are trying to build a team, it is a new project, so it is a lot different here. The players are still getting to know each other, so it is something that is still building up.
“But everything was great right from the start here, the players made me feel really welcome. The fans, manager, everyone. I felt at home from the first moment I walked in.
“The players were great, really friendly and the spirit was as good as they told me. Two goals as well makes it the best possible welcome I could ever hope for.”
Jo earned the first-half penalty from which Mikel Arteta netted Everton’s opener, then opened his Goodison account with a well-taken turn and volley five minutes after the break.
Everton were then awarded another penalty in injury time and, with Arteta having been substituted, skipper Phil Neville ensured Jo had the chance to score his second from the spot.
“Phil told me that it was my prize for the work I had done,” said the Brazilian. “It was a really nice gesture of the captain to make.”
Meanwhile, Aston Villa will be without Gareth Barry for the FA Cup clash with Everton on Sunday.
Barry received his fifth booking of the season when celebrating Villa’s second goal in their win at Blackburn on Saturday.
Steven Pienaar is also banned for Everton, but Tim Cahill, Phil Neville, Mikel Arteta and Joleon Lescott all avoided fifth bookings in Saturday’s win over Bolton.
