Everton captain Phil Neville's rally cry for Manchester United final

PHIL NEVILLE has urged Everton to “step up and be men” after earning a Wembley date with Manchester United.

David Moyes’s side reached the last four of the FA Cup after coming from behind to defeat Middlesbrough 2-1 in their quarter-final at Goodison yesterday.

Two goals in seven second-half minutes turned the game with substitute Louis Saha scoring the 57th-minute winner shortly after Marouane Fellaini had equalised David Wheater’s first-half opener for the visitors.

It was enough to book Everton’s 24th appearance in the semi-finals of the competition, where they will face Premier League leaders United at Wembley on the weekend of April 18-19.

The Old Trafford side, who are chasing an unprecedented quintuple, were impressive in booking their last-four berth with a 4-0 win at Fulham at the weekend.

And skipper Neville hailed the courage of Everton’s fightback with Moyes’s men determined to go all the way and reach the final on May 30.

“We are really happy,” said Neville. “You can play all your tactics but it’s about being brave and in the second half we showed the real Everton.

“But we are not satisfied with just the semi-final. We aim to win the trophy. That’s been our aim all along.

“From the moment we drew Liverpool and beat them, the fans were saying that it’s going to be our year.

“We have one step to go. We want to bring silverware to this club because it has been too long. It’s going to be a difficult draw.

“I watched United on Saturday night on television and they were awesome. Now is the time to step up and be men.”

The semi-final draw will evoke memories of Everton’s last major Wembley appearance, when Paul Rideout’s goal earned a 1-0 win over United in the 1995 FA Cup final.

And Neville, who was man of the match yesterday, added: “The fans will enjoy it at Wembley but we want the trophy. The fans have been magnificent throughout this cup run.

“If any team deserves this, then it is us because of the teams that we have played. If we play like we did in the second half then we’ll enjoy ourselves at Wembley.”

Saha emerged from the bench at half-time to score the winner, his second goal in as many home games after netting against West Bromwich Albion the previous week.

And Neville added: “Everybody knows Louis Saha’s quality.

“He has won us a few games in the last few weeks.

“If we’re going to be successful this season then we are going to need him firing on all cylinders. He’s going to be vital for us.”

Saha himself believes it will be a “special” occasion when Everton face off against his former club United next month for a place in the final.

“It’s a great feeling to have scored the winner,” said the Frenchman. “It’s amazing to have team-mates who have such great commitment and help you through difficult times.

“We did not play well in the first half but in the second we showed out spirit. It’s great to get back to Wembley and playing there is always special.

“You have to beat the big teams at some point and this will be a big test for us because they are the best team around.”
