Leighton Baines: We can match Man Utd - Everton latest

Leighton Baines

Despite the self-belief the Goodison outfit can reach a first major final in 14 years, Baines is aware of the size of the take facing a United team Everton have beaten only four times in their last 39 meetings.

Baines said: “They have strength in depth. There could be a couple of players who you’re expecting to play who could be on the bench and other people can come in. They’re a bit different, with the players they’ve got they’re a bit special at times.”

Everton manager Moyes has been critical of the decision by the Football Association to hold FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley for the foreseeable future, and Baines reveals the players are in agreement.

“There is added spice with the game being at Wembley, and it’s a massive chance to get this club into a final and it’s been too long since we’ve been in one,” said the 24-year-old.

“Generally the feeling among the players is that it shouldn’t be played at Wembley and maybe takes a bit away from the final. But that’s the situation and we’re all looking forward to it.”

Former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Steven Pienaar regards Sunday’s game as the biggest in his career.

“It will definitely be on top,” said the South Africa international. “I’ve played in a lot of important games and I think this one will also go down in the history books and I’m looking forward to it. For me, this is like a normal game, it’s just that it’s a semi-final. Like when you play at home with all the supporters behind you, you have to enjoy the moment.

“Manchester United are not only the top team in England but in Europe also. Sometimes you have a dip and in the last four games they haven’t done so well, but they can turn it around in a second. We just have to go out and play our own game and not worry about them.”
