Mark Lawrenson: Keeping quiet is key to Tim Howard’s success

Tim Howard

I WAS at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday night watching Didier Drogba’s antics and was suddenly reminded about how some professional footballers just have no idea to conduct themselves.

Then over the weekend I was reminded that there are still many players in the game who don’t fall into this category.

I wasn’t actually aware that Tim Howard had broken a club Premier League clean sheet record held by Neville Southall when he kept Spurs at bay in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Goodison Park.

And that kind of sums up the type of player he is. He has overshadowed one of the greatest goalkeepers to have played the game and a man who became an Everton legend thanks to his exploits between the sticks.

And he has done it with no fuss whatsoever.

Howard will be pleased with the record, but not because of any personal glory it brings him. The only thing he will be bothered about is that the statistics prove he is doing a great job.

You would never find him ranting and raving in front of TV cameras – in fact, you would never find him ranting and raving at his defence.

As a defender I never got this thing of keepers racing out to give you a mouthful and constantly barking instructions and orders.

It’s off-putting, not just for the back four, but I don’t see how a keeper can be concentrating 100% on his own job if he’s too busy shouting to others about what they are doing.
