Everton won’t suffer post-Wembley blues
THE stark lesson of Portsmouth’s FA Cup hangover need not give Everton fans too many headaches ahead of Saturday – but it is something they need to be wary of.
The manner in which they let the optimism and momentum of last May slip through their grasp was alarming. Their form since Harry Redknapp’s departure would have seen them relegated without the cushion of the early-season wins.
But whatever the result in the 2009 final, there are good reasons why Everton will not tread a similar path.
Their appearance at Wembley is the result of concerted, steady progression over several seasons while their difficult cup run has meant their place is thoroughly deserved. They have not benefited from an easy draw.
The strong performances against Chelsea this season will also provide inspiration to Everton fans – and the millions of neutrals who will no doubt be cheering them on.
Hopefully the only Cup final hangover is the result of too much celebrating – and has cleared in plenty of time for the start of next season.
