TIM CAHILL believes Everton must move wisely in the transfer market this summer to ensure they build on a season of further progress.
The Goodison outfit suffered the heartbreak of FA Cup final defeat when they lost 2-1 to Chelsea on Saturday at Wembley.
However, the loss could not detract from another impressive campaign, with a second successive fifth-place finish and a third consecutive European qualification secured.
The transfer window opens today, with manager David Moyes hopeful of strengthening his squad in the summer months.
And Cahill is convinced Everton can continue their upward curve – provided the correct recruits are identified and captured.
"With the right additions to the squad, there is definitely no reason why we cannot kick on from here," said the Australian.
"The fans have been brilliant all the time that I have been here, but what happens next is down to us. It’s down to the players whether it goes better or worse from here. The summer will be all about trying to keep the main core of players who want to play for the football club. There are exciting times ahead."
Everton raced into a 1-0 lead after just 25 seconds at Wembley, with Louis Saha scoring the quickest goal in FA Cup final history.
But Didier Drogba equalised midway through the first half before Frank Lampard netted the winner 18 minutes from time.
Moyes’s men had knocked out fellow top six sides Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester United en route to Saturday’s showpiece occasion.
And Cahill refuted suggestions the injury-hit squad were running on empty at the critical moment.
