EVERTON’S international contingent kept their campaigns alive on a dramatic night of tournament football.
Jack Rodwell edged closer to success with the England under-21s as they booked their semi-final place with a 2-0 victory over Spain in the European Championships.
And Tim Howard’s USA, despite being beaten 3-0 by Brazil, were then given an unexpected lifeline when Egypt shocked world champions Italy.
The Americans must now beat Egypt in their final group game and hope Brazil can defeat Italy to give them a chance of extending their stay in South Africa.
Rodwell’s England have no such worries as they secured progress with victory over Spain.
Frazier Campbell and James Milner – who also missed a penalty in the first half- scored the goals in the second half in Gothenberg.
It means England are assured of a semi-final spot after their win over Finland earlier in the week. Rodwell made an appearance in that game but he didn’t play last night.
