Everton FC's Leighton Baines _300
LEIGHTON BAINES has faith that David Moyes will bring in the right recruits to Everton this summer – insisting that the Goodison Park manager should not be rushed.
Apart from the 2006 close season when Tim Howard, Andrew Johnson and Joleon Lescott were all snapped up by mid-June, Everton have tended to do their purchasing late in the summer for several years.
Everton are not expected to enter the transfer market this summer until July at the earliest with Moyes away on holiday until the end of this month.
The Scot was forced to make do with a series of cut-price deals last year until the club transfer record was broken just before the deadline with the £15m recruitment of Marouane Fellaini but Baines, whose move to Goodison in 2007 was not sealed until the August, is not concerned about waiting for new team-mates to arrive.
Leighton Baines has great faith that manager David Moyes will bring more top-quality talent to Goodison.
The left-back believes his manager will make the best decisions for the club when the time is right and said: “Not much tends to happen at this stage – it’s more when we’re back training. There’s already been quite a few big money moves and hopefully we can get involved in the market at some point and strengthen the squad to give is a chance to kick on.
“It’s been proven time and time again now that he (Moyes) does get it right. You could list the names and I think people all know the lads who he’s brought in at really good prices who have done a fantastic job for this club. He won’t be rushed; he’s shown that in the past. He’ll take his time and make sure he gets the right person at the right price.”
The defender paid a visit to the club’s Finch Farm training complex to maintain his fitness during the close-season, and he admitted even three weeks on from the FA Cup final defeat, the disappointment still remains. But Baines is hopeful of building on last season’s achievements, especially when the squad numbers are boosted by the return of injury absentees and new recruits alike.
