“Everybody will obviously still be disappointed,” he told evertonTV. “It’s a massive missed opportunity to be a Cup final winner. “But the opportunity has passed us by now and we’ve got to do our best to get over it before we come back to training.

“We’ve got to set our sights on getting there again and going one further. Everyone will benefit from having been able to play at that level.

“For the club, on reflection, I think it’s been another fantastic season. There were quite a lot of obstacles, what with the injuries, but it happened, it made things harder and we rose to the challenge really well.

“All in all it was a fantastic effort from everybody.”

Meanwhile, two of Baines’s international Goodison team-mates were on international duty over the weekend.

Steven Pienaar played in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the Confederations Cup – with the hosts progressing for the semi-finals despite their loss to the European champions.

An impressive defensive display from Joseph Yobo helped Nigeria to 0-0 draw in their World Cup quali-fier away to Tunisia.
