Pearce saw the raw ability Rodwell possessed when he promoted him from the under-19s last season, but he wanted him to be more vocal on the pitch.
The under-21s coach wants to build a team around Rodwell for the 2011 campaign but there is also the potential of Fabio Capello showing interest if he continues his progress.
“He’s a quiet character but strong mentally,” Pearce said. “I feel there is a strong character in there and he undoubtedly has great ability.
“He’s so comfortable on the ball, it’s difficult to compare him to other players. The ball comes to him and you don’t expect him to lose it. At this level of international it is a great commodity to have.”
