Everton's Joleon Lescott asks for transfer but David Moyes says no

Joleon Lescott

For now, though, Lescott is left in an awkward situation with Moyes clearly happy to hold on to a player who still has three years remaining on his contract.

Lescott missed Sunday’s 2-2 friendly draw at Coventry City because of a hip injury that also keeps him out of tonight’s pre-season encounter at Coca-Cola Championship side Blackpool.

But it is likely the centre-back will suffer a backlash from Everton supporters should he appear in Friday’s final warm-up game against Malaga at Goodison.

With Phil Jagielka sidelined for the opening months of the campaign, Moyes is determined not to further limit his options at the heart of defence.

Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos and Sebastien Bassong of Newcastle United are two centre-backs Moyes has been linked with should he ultimately grant Lescott his wish of a transfer.

But Everton are likely to miss out on highly-rated Leeds United youngster Fabian Delph.

Aston Villa yesterday agreed a fee of around £8m for the England under-21 international, who is now poised to have a medical with the Midlanders.

A Leeds spokesperson said yesterday: “Leeds United can confirm that a fee has been agreed with Aston Villa for Fabian Delph.

“Leeds United wishes to place on record our appreciation for the honourable manner in which Aston Villa have conducted their interest in the player. The club has resisted approaches from other FA Premier League clubs since agreeing terms with Aston Villa.”

Meanwhile, reports claim Everton have handed a trial to 19-year-old Slovenian midfielder Peter Stojanovic.

The teenager is currently with Slovenian top-flight side Celje.
