David Moyes 300
However, Moyes reckons his current squad are better placed to start the campaign than last year, when indifferent early league results were compounded by first-round exits from the Carling Cup and UEFA Cup.
The Scot said: “The players are ahead of where we were last year. The group is probably better and more ready.
“We have got one or two more players than we had last year and I think they are as fit as they were at the end of last season.
“I don’t see the fitness as being a great problem.”
Moyes remains hopeful his defence will be bolstered by the arrival of Philippe Senderos from Arsenal. Everton are edging nearer a deal for the Switzerland international, who it is believed is keen on a switch to Goodison.
Steven Pienaar, who has missed the last three friendlies with a thigh strain sustained during training in the United States last week, has responded to treatment and could appear in tomorrow’s friendly against Malaga.
But Louis Saha is struggling to be available as Everton look to manage his asthma.
Meanwhile, Everton youngster Shane Duffy has been called up to the Northern Ireland under-21 squad for the visit to Portugal on August 11.
