ACADEMY FOOTBALL: James McCarten and Conor McAleny on target as Everton FC under-18s defeat Manchester City

EVERTON under-18s built on last week’s Merseyside derby success with another impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester City at Finch Farm on Saturday.

Goals from James McCarten and Conor McAleny – his fourth of the season – gave Neil Dewsnip’s side the points against City.

Everton’s youngsters are finally getting the results their performances have deserved.

While the two goals last week came in the final eight minutes Everton were 2-0 up by half-time. They took the lead after just 10 minutes when centre-back McCarten rose well to head home Luke Garbutt’s cross.

Midway through the first half the home side doubled their advantage. McAleny, who also sealed the points with the second goal against Liverpool last week, repeated the feat when he cut in from the left and cracked home a superb effort into the bottom corner.

City tried to hit back in the second half, but Everton’s defence were in no mood to let them through. But Everton created the better chances with Femi Orenuga doing well on the right.

The only real chance the visitors had was in the last minute but keeper Adam Davies tipped over superbly.

Coach Dewsnip was delighted with his side’s efforts and said: “It was a smashing result. We scored two in the first half and from then we were very discipl-ined and defended well. They didn’t really hurt us.

“There were lots of positives, we played well throughout and we’ve kept another clean sheet.

“We probably haven’t played as well with the ball in the last two games as we have done all season, but ironically the results have turned around. It is a strange old game.”
