Mo Johnston backs Everton FC manager David Moyes for Scotland job

David Moyes

FORMER Everton  striker Maurice  Johnston believes  David Moyes is the man  to revive  Scotland after  George Burley was  yesterday sacked as  national team coach.

The Scottish Football  Association acted  quickly after Scotland  fans turned on Burley  during  Saturday’s  dismal 3-0 friendly  defeat by Wales.

Chief executive  Gordon Smith  canvassed his 10  colleagues on the SFA  board and they came  to  a unanimous decision  to terminate his  contract.

Johnston, capped 38  times by his country,  believes Scotland need  someone to instil  character  in the  national team.

And he sees Goodison  manager Moyes as the  ideal man to bring the  pride back into Scottish   football with Burley’s  failure to guide the  country to the World  Cup extending  Scotland’s exile from  a  major championship to  at least 14 years.

“If you’re looking for  a new coach, (Everton  boss) Davie Moyes fits  the bill,” Johnston said.   “He’s done a hell of a  job.

“Owen Coyle is a little  bit too young for the job.  If Graeme Souness is out  there, 100%.

“I know he said he  wouldn’t take it but he’s  someone that would  come in and shake the   trees.

“Is there a lot of  people who want to take  the job? There probably  won’t be at the moment   because we’re at rock  bottom.

“I think the guy that  comes in needs time.  Whether you get that  time as Scotland  manager, will  be seen.”

Johnston, who is now  director of football at  Major League Soccer  side Toronto, added: “I  think  the team needs a  little bit of character.

“It needs to be a little  bit more creative. I  think we need to look at  the ground level in  terms of  what we’re  doing with young kids  coming through.
