Moving to Everton FC has helped my World Cup dream, says John Heitinga

Heitinga has played in a number of positions since his arrival with his versatility invaluable given the injury crisis that has struck Everton this season.

But the Holland international is hopeful of emerging as a key part of the central defence under Goodison manager David Moyes.

“We have been rocked by injuries at Everton, so I have played in midfield on two occasions,” said Heitinga. “But my favourite position is in the centre of defence. Everton signed me so I could play as centre-back.

“Circumstances may force me to play at right-back, both with the Dutch team and Everton. I am a versatile defender and can play multiple positions at the back, but, again, I prefer to play in the heart of defence.”

Heitinga is expected to once again appear when Everton resume Premier League hostilities with a trip to Manchester United tomorrow evening.

And it has emerged Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be in the home dugout after all, after the Football Association have confirmed Ferguson’s two-match touchline ban does not start until 14 days after the disciplinary panel hearing, which was held last week.

Ferguson was given a four-match touchline ban, of which two are suspended until the end of next season, after admitting a charge of improper conduct.

The charge related to media comments made about Alan Wiley following United’s match against Sunderland at Old Trafford in October when he questioned the referee’s fitness.
