Diniyar Bilyaletdinov
And Bilyaletdinov explains: "It was a playing situation. It was not malicious. It was only the second red card in the whole of my career and I was really disappointed and upset about it because it meant I was banned for three matches just as I felt that I was doing well.
"I went to play for Russia for two games, which helped me keep up my fitness."
Those two games were his country’s World Cup qualification play-off against Slovenia, and although Bilyaletdinov scored twice in the first leg in Moscow, the concession of a late goal meant a 1-0 defeat in the return match ended Russia’s dreams of reaching next summer’s finals in South Africa.
"It’s football and life," says the winger. "You can’t be sure what is going to happen in advance. It was a tragedy for everyone. The number of fans and they were looking forward to us getting good results."
A number of Everton fans are looking forward to their team getting good results after Wednesday’s dismal 3-2 defeat against Hull City extended a poor run of form to one win in 10.
With neighbours Liverpool are similarly struggling, there is more than just local bragging rights at stake in tomorrow’s Goodison derby, as both sides desperately strive for the victory they believe could kickstart their campaign.
"Everyone has told me that we two very important matches and it’s the biggest thing in every season," says Bilyaletdinov. "I’m looking forward to the match.
"The players, the staff, everyone has told me about it and what to expect. We have lost our last few games and the fact that Liverpool are the next opponents gives us extra stimulus.
"The biggest derby is Spartak and CSKA, full stadium, fighting game. There are other teams in Moscow but not such a big derby.
"It’s different feelings here than in Moscow. In Moscow nobody spoke about the game in the weeks before whereas here they are talking about this game the whole year around.
"There are fans who come to watch us train and they tell me what this game means."
Bilyaletdinov adds: "First of all, we need to score goals. To score a goal is a team effort. We’re aiming to score more goals than the other side.
"Being part of the team I have to score a goal to help bring us results. Obviously if we have a victory it will be psychological. It will help to relieve the pressure, especially it being against Liverpool."
