Peter Mandelson offers hope of reviving Destination Kirkby

He said there has to be a “particular focus” on the effect on the town and the wider region of the decision.

He echoed the view of his minister Pat McFadden, who said: “Sometimes, an altered or an amended application can present a way through the logjam.”

Mr Howarth, whose constituency includes Kirkby, said afterwards: “The Denham decision left the door ajar for a modified application.

“Although Lord Mandelson was not involved in the decision, in his role as Business Secretary he understands the importance of the regeneration and future employment issues raised by the decision. I was very encouraged by our meeting.”

Cllr Round said: “He understands that we are not going to give up on this in any way, shape or form. We promised the people of Kirkby that they would see the regeneration of their town and we will deliver.”

Everton, though, have appeared less keen to push on with a new plan following the Government’s decision that Destination Kirkby would impact too heavily on the likes of St Helens, Skelmersdale and Bootle.

Club chairman Bill Kenwright has said “in terms of Kirkby, the chapter is over and the book is closed”, while chief executive Robert Elstone pondered a shared stadium with rivals Liverpool.
