JAMES VAUGHAN is desperate to “invent” himself again and kickstart his Everton career after making his latest comeback from injury at the weekend.
And the 21-year-old striker admits he would be happy to once more drop down a division on loan in an attempt to bolster his first-team chances at Goodison.
Vaughan made his first Everton appearance since August after coming on as a last-minute substitute during Sunday’s 1-1 home draw against Birmingham City.
The forward had been sidelined since September after suffering cartilage problem just two games into a three-month loan at Coca-Cola Championship outfit Derby County.
A succession of injury problems have restricted Vaughan to just 10 starts for Everton with Sunday’s outing only his 50th of a career that began with a record-breaking debut back in April 2005 when he became the Premier League's youngest-ever goalscorer.
And the England under-21 international admits he is tired of being remembered for that landmark and his subsequent injury problems.
“I had another setback but only a minor one, it was a bit of a kick in the teeth but you have to get on with it, don’t you?” said Vaughan. “Hopefully I can now stay fit for the remainder of the season and have a good second half of the campaign.
“The past is the past for me and I just want to create a new record and do what I can do in the future. I don’t really want to look back. It’s really nice to have and I’ll always be proud of holding it, but if it was to go tomorrow it wouldn’t really affect me at all.
“I just want to move on now, forget about my injuries, forget about everything that’s gone before and just invent myself again. Hopefully then I can give people new things to talk about.”
Derby manager Nigel Clough was so impressed with Vaughan during his short stay at Pride Park that he has already intimated he would be willing to take the striker on again on a short-term basis in the New Year.
