A warm welcome in the cold for Landon Donovan - Everton FC latest

NOT even the Arctic conditions have been enough to wipe the broad smile off Landon Donovan’s face this week.

It might be a pleasant 23 degrees back home in sun-kissed Los Angeles but the American forward isn’t dreaming of home.

Finch Farm has been transformed into a winter wonderland but the reception he’s received from his team-mates have helped warm the heart of Everton’s newest recruit.

Since making the journey across the Atlantic to start his 10-week loan spell at Goodison, the 27-year-old’s excitement has been growing about making his Premier League bow.

“Obviously the weather is different here,” he said.

“I hear it’s a bit abnormal for it to be this cold and have this much snow, but coming from America it’s been fun.

“I’ve adapted to it really well and it’s actually a little easier to run when it’s cold. It’s more difficult in the heat in the USA.

“The welcome I’ve had since I’ve been here has been unbelievable. I was in the stands for the game against Carlisle and everyone was so friendly. They seemed excited to have me here and that’s a nice feeling for a player.

“It’s been nice this week getting the chance to play with different guys. Obviously with Fellaini, Pienaar, Cahill, Saha, there are some talented footballers here. For me it’s going to be very nice to play alongside those guys.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to play with so many great players. No-one is exempt from being made fun of and for me it has been enjoyable off the pitch as well.

“I feel like I fit in well here and the guys have taken to me well. You just want to get on with your team-mates and feel you are part of something and I already feel that.”

One player who Donovan didn’t need introducing to was his USA international team-mate Tim Howard.

The LA Galaxy forward admits the Everton goalkeeper played a key role in convincing him to accept David Moyes’ offer.

“Tim was the first guy to call me to say he heard the club might be interested in me,” Donovan said.

“We talked about it and what the expectations were. Everything he has ever said to me about Everton has been positive.

“I’ve never heard a bad word and after being here for a week, I realise why.

“When a club like Everton comes calling you aren’t going to say no, but after talking to Tim and the manager I had a good feeling about this place.

“I realise I’m not just coming for a few months for a kick around. This is the middle of the club’s season, they need immediate help and I’m ready for that.”
