February will shape our season, says Everton FC manager David Moyes

“He has a great goalscoring record in America, it’s near enough one in two. He has a great record the national team. He hadn’t really had many chances in his games, but he got his goal tonight and was unlucky not to score another. If he can add more goals for us, then great.

“It helps that he is an English speaker and the Americans in general have a great work ethic, which is needed in the Premier League. Landon also has a high level of play from so many international games.”

Cahill also earned plaudits from the Everton manager having netted only his third Premier League goal of the season.

“Tim has come on, his game has improved in the last month,” said Moyes. “He just needs a couple of goals to go with it. The goal tonight is hopefully the first of more to come.”

While new loan signing Philippe Senderos remained an unused substitute last night, Mikel Arteta made his second appearance this week while Victor Anichebe emerged in the final minute for his first outing since suffering a serious knee injury almost a year ago.

And Moyes said: “It’s important that we get a strong bench.

“It’s important to have that through a season, but we haven’t had that for most of the time.

“But we have to temper that with the fact both Mikel Arteta and Victor Anichebe haven’t done much real training.

“They need more work done, but it’s much better to have players of that quality on the bench in case we want to change something.”
