Tim Cahill
MATCH-WINNER Tim Cahill has set his sights on the derby victory he believes would leave Liverpool looking nervously over their shoulders at neighbours Everton.
Cahill netted the only goal as the Goodison outfit extended their unbeaten Premier League run to nine games with a 1-0 win at Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
The result moved David Moyes’s side to within two points of eighth-placed Birmingham City and maintained an outside chance of European qualification.
Everton’s winter revival will be put to the test during a tough February which begins this coming weekend at Liverpool.
But derby specialist Cahill – no player has scored more goals for Everton at Anfield – believes Moyes’s men go into the game with burgeoning confidence.
“We’ve had difficult months for the whole season,” he said. “But we’re excited about what lies ahead.
“The derby is one of our big games of the season and we’re looking forward to it. It’s a game we always relish and so do our fans.
“We’ll go out there and give everything and hopefully the result goes our way.
“Can we still catch Liverpool? I don’t think about that too much. All I know is that they’re a very good team and a few points ahead of us.
“We just need to worry about ourselves and try and keep on improving. But if we can get the result against them they might well be looking over their shoulders at us. We’re really happy with the situation we find ourselves in now ahead of that game.”
Of Everton’s unbeaten run, Cahill added: “We’ll take it a game at a time and not look too far ahead but this is what we are capable of.
“We rode the wave earlier in the season and now we are trying to find our form. We’ve got it at the moment and now we need the momentum to take it forward and continue.
“We stuck together at the back and we’re all ready to work hard for each other. It feels all the more special because we went through hard times earlier in the season and now we are getting what we deserve.
