Everton FC latest: Philippe Senderos on standby after Phil Jagielka setback

DAVID MOYES will turn to Philippe Senderos to help guide Everton to Europa League progress after Phil Jagielka saw his hopes of a comeback dashed.

Jagielka’s 10-month injury nightmare has been extended by a few days more after his proposed comeback for the reserves last night was postponed.

The centre-back was expected to play 45 minutes against Bolton Wanderers at Halton Stadium only for the game to be called off due to a frozen pitch.

Jagielka hasn’t played since damaging cruciate ligaments in his left knee against Manchester City last April, and may have to wait a little longer with the reserves next in action a week tomorrow.

The England international had been tentatively slated to be in the squad for tomorrow’s Europa League return tie at Sporting Lisbon, where Everton look to defend a 2-1 first-leg lead.

And while Jagielka will be in the party that flies out to Portugal later today, his lack of competitive action means Everton manager David Moyes would be reticent to throw the player back into the first team.

With Sylvain Distin suspended, John Heitinga ineligible and Tony Hibbert injured, the setback for Jagielka further limits Everton’s centre-back options.

It means Moyes is now sweating on the availability of Senderos to partner Joseph Yobo for the Goodison outfit’s most important game of the season.

Senderos has sat out the last two games with a back problem, but Everton are hopeful the Switzerland international is winning his battle to be fit.

One player who will be in action in the Estadio Jose Alvalade is Mikel Arteta, despite Moyes’s determination not to heap any expectation or pressure on the midfielder.

Everton’s injury problems have prevented Arteta from being eased back into action after 11 months on the sidelines with serious knee damage.

The Spanish midfielder has started the last three games after playing 50 minutes as a substitute in the Merseyside derby earlier this month.

But Moyes believes it will be some time before Arteta recaptures his best form.
