Leighton Baines 300
LEIGHTON BAINES is set for a double celebration as he closes in on a new Everton contract.
Negotiations with Goodison officials are at an advanced stage over a fresh deal for the left-back, who has two years remaining on his current agreement.
Baines has proven a major success since arriving from Wigan Athletic in a £6million deal in August 2007.
The 25-year-old made his England debut in March after his impressive form brought him to the attention of national team coach Fabio Capello.
And Baines is in line for a place at the World Cup after this week being included in Capello’s preliminary 30-man squad for the finals in South Africa.
David Moyes is keen to tie up the core of his squad after Everton finished the season in fine fashion with just two defeats in their last 24 Premier League games.
While Steven Pienaar this week declared his intention to wait until after the World Cup to continue talks over a new deal, Tim Cahill has already agreed to sign a four-year contract ahead of the finals.
Jack Rodwell is also closing in on a new deal with talks ongoing over a lucrative package to reward the 19-year-old for his progress.
And Everton will consider discussions with Mikel Arteta over a fresh agreement to stave off reported interest from Arsenal, given suggestions Arsene Wenger is eyeing Arteta as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas should the midfielder return to Barcelona.
Philippe Senderos has become the ninth Everton man to be named in a provisional World Cup squad after being included in Switzerland’s 30-man squad.
Another player to have appeared for Moyes’s side this season who will be present in South Africa is Landon Donovan.
The United States international made a huge impact during a 10-week loan spell from MLS side LA Galaxy earlier this year.
