LEIGHTON BAINES believes Everton can reap the rewards of their impressive pre-season as they sign off their Premier League preparations this afternoon.
David Moyes's side will look to seal a perfect warm-up campaign with victory against Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in Germany.
Everton have so far won all six of their friendlies, with Wednesday's triumph over their Chilean namesakes following defeats of Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Heart, Sydney FC, Preston North End and Norwich City.
It has continued the Goodison outfit's encouraging end to the previous campaign when they lost only two of their final 24 league games.
That came after a desperate start to the season in which they took only 15 points from their first 14 Premier League games having been thumped 6-1 at home by Arsenal on the opening day.
Moyes's men begin at Blackburn Rovers next Saturday, and Baines is convinced the squad is in its best shape going into a new term than in some years.
"I can sense we have more confidence," said the left-back. "We don't normally win many games in pre-season so we are all wondering what's going on!
"We haven't been starting seasons so well, and maybe that had something to do with it. We have definitely been more conscious about that, and the results, although it's only pre-season, have mattered a bit more.
"Hopefully that will reflect in the way we start the season, where we will carry on where we have left off in pre-season. Unfortunately, that's what has happened in previous seasons where we have had some poor results going into the Premier League and started badly as a consequence."
Baines added: "There's been a slightly different approach, we've come back earlier to training and it's been structured differently.
"It seems to have worked so far, we are looking sharper and we hope to take that into the Blackburn game."
Baines admits Wolfsburg, who are managed by former England manager Steve McClaren, will prove a further step up in class for Everton.
