Sylvain Distin says Everton FC need to bring in new players if they are to keep pace in the Premier League

SYLVAIN DISTIN hopes Everton FC manager David Moyes can add to his squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Transfer activity has been scarce at Goodison Park this summer, with Sporting Lisbon teenager Eric Dier, on a season-long loan deal, the only arrival at Goodison Park since the end of last season.

The likes of Charles N’Zogbia, Demba Ba and Miroslav Klose were all touted as potential targets, but financial restraints meant Moyes was unable to firm up his initial interest.

Meanwhile, striker James Vaughan has departed for newly-promoted Norwich City, and is expected to be followed out of the exit door by the out-of-favour duo Joseph Yobo and Yakubu before the new campaign begins in a fortnight's time.

And with Premier League rivals spending big in what has been a busy summer so far, Distin believes “one or two” new faces are needed at the club, if they are to keep pace.

“We have to wait and see who is going to come and go,” Distin said. “Hopefully none of the top players will leave, but I think we definitely need to strengthen our team a bit.

“If you look at the teams around us, they have got three or four if not five players, and quality players too. You look at a team like Sunderland or Newcastle, teams like that, they have definitely improved their teams in both numbers and quality, and that is what we need. We need to improve the squad in terms of quality.

“That doesn't mean we don't have quality now, but we have a small squad and we will get injuries - that is the Premier League - so it could be tough. One or two players would definitely help.”
