Everton FC latest: Phil Jagielka sets sights on England double

Phil Jagielka

EVERTON FC defender Phil Jagielka is determined to help England reach next summer’s Euro 2012 finals – and then ensure his involvement at the tournament.

Jagielka is expected to line up at right-back this evening for the decisive qualifying match in Montenegro, with Fabio Capello’s team requiring just a point to progress.

The 29-year-old has yet to appear in a major international tournament having been overlooked for last year’s World Cup finals.

However, the Everton defender has since become a regular in Capello’s squad and has set his sights on retaining that position should England win through to the finals in Poland and Ukraine.

“I have not been to a major tournament and it would be nice to do so,” said Jagielka.

“We all know there is only one way of doing that – that is me progressing at Everton and playing a little bit better than we have done at the start of the season.

“The lads are still confident and morale is still good.”

Everton resume their Premier League campaign at Chelsea tomorrow week having suffered back-to-back top-flight defeats for the first time in almost two years with the 2-0 loss to Liverpool last Saturday.

And Tim Cahill said: “It is always sad to lose a derby. But we have to look forward now, we really need to pick ourselves up now and look to the Chelsea game.
