Phil Jagielka at Chelsea
PHIL JAGIELKA believes individual errors cost Everton dearly as they slumped to their first Premier League defeat at Chelsea since 2006.
Goals from Daniel Sturridge, John Terry and Ramires gave Andre Villas-Boas’s men the points at Stamford Bridge, with teenage striker Apostolos Vellios’s late consolation goal the only bright spot for David Moyes’s side.
The Toffees now lie in15th place in the Premier League table, just two points off the bottom, having lost each of their last three games.
Jagielka, however, believes it was a couple of defensive lapses which proved costly, after a promising first-half display from the visitors in west London.
“You can’t give a team like Chelsea a 2-0 head start and hope to get anything out of the game,” he said.
“I didn’t think we played particularly badly in the first-half but unfortunately a couple of lapses, or errors in judgement or whatever you want to call it, cost us two goals.
“It was always going to be an uphill task after that.”
Jagielka pinpointed Terry’s strike, headed home just seconds before half-time, as the game’s key moment.
“The second goal was crucial,” he admitted.
“As soon as they were 2-0 up we had to go chasing the game a little bit more.
“If it was 1-0 then maybe we could have kept it a little bit tighter until the last 15-20 minutes.
