EVERTON FC’S defeat to Chelsea rather slipped under the radar on Saturday, what with all the fuss over events at Anfield.
That was probably for the best, in all honesty. The Toffees were well beaten at Stamford Bridge.
David Moyes’ side, for want of a better phrase, just weren’t at it. They were competitive for the opening half-hour, but once the first goal went in it was game over.
I know they lost, in abject circumstances, to QPR earlier in the season, but this was a low ebb for Moyes I’m sure.
In many ways, the performance reminded me of the one Liverpool turned in in another part of London, at Tottenham.
It’s a shame for Everton, because their recent record at Stamford Bridge is probably as good as anyone’s. Trouble is, you can’t keep defying the odds, especially against a side which, despite what a lot of people think, are genuine contenders for the title.
David would never admit it publicly, but those are bonus games, where any point taken is very welcome.
The defeat leaves Everton in 15th place, and just two points off the bottom of the league, but I don’t think there is any need to be overly concerned.
After all, weren’t they in a similar position around this time last season?
They have a big game at Fulham next weekend, but a win at Craven Cottage could take them up five or six places, and suddenly the world looks rosy again.
And when you look at the sides in and around them at the moment, and the quality of player (and manager) that Everton possess, well I know which team I would be backing to climb the table before long.
