Ian Doyle: Tim Howard’s importance to Everton has now taken on even greater emphasis

IF Sunday’s dramatic win at Fulham underlined the importance of Tim Howard to Everton, then Wednesday’s Carling Cup exit confirmed it.

While Howard pulled off a string of outstanding saves at Craven Cottage, his replacement, Jan Mucha, was somewhat less impressive against Chelsea.

His bloopers, along with the penalty miss from the normally-reliably Leighton Baines, combined to close the door on one route to the European return David Moyes so craves.

The FA Cup, not for the time under the Scot, now takes on even greater importance.
